INTRODUCTION
The
Ajgaivinath temple is situated in the Sultanganj, Bihar , India .
It is famous for the sanctity of the idol of Lord Shiva. Though the origins and
deity of the temple are still under research it is believed that the idol is of
Lord Swayambhu. The temple is built over a rock that and boasts of many rock sculptors
with inscriptions on them. The idol of Lord Shiva is also known by the name of
Gaibinath Mahadeo.
Whether
the origins of the temple are from Jahngira or Sultanganj is still unknown but
the name Jahangira came from the word Jahnu giri or the Jahnu griha. In present
times, the place Jahangira is a small part of Sultanganj.
HISTORY
The
Indian legend has it that Lord Shiva was presented with his bow, Ajgav, here
and the place was named as Ajgaivinath. Originally, the place was called
Jahangira which meant the dwelling place of Jahanu. It is known that rock was
called Jahangira till 1822-25 since the rock is mentioned in Herber Journal,
Vol. 1 under the same name.
It is
an ancient belief that Kala Pahar tried to destroy the Ajgaivinath temple in
his quest against the Hindu temples but in vain. He , however, demolished
the Parvati temple on a nearby hill and
built a mosque there.
HOW TO REACH
By Air
The
nearest Aerodrome near the temple is the Ranchi
Airport and the Lok
Nayaka Jaya
Prakash Narayana
Airport in Patna . The temple is well connected by these
airports and can be easily reached by the metropolitan cities like Delhi and Kolkata.
By Rail
The temple is well-connected through various rail routes by the
Sultanganj railway station on the Eastern railway loop including-:
1.
Reach Sultanganj from Patna via a 196 km train that takes four
hours
2.
Reach Sultanganj from Ranchi via a 210 km train that takes 11
hours.
3.
Reach Sultanganj from Kolkata via a 450 km train
that takes eleven hours.
By Road
It is
well connected via bus routes as well and the NH-80 highway passed through it.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TEMPLE
The
temple has the idol of Lord Shiva which is famous amongst his devotees for
fulfilling all their wishes and desires,
WEATHER AND TIME TO VISIT
The
temple is open all year round though the ideal weather to visit the temple is
between July to September and February to May. The best time to visit the
temple would be the time of the Shravani Mela, the most famous and important
festival of Sultanganj. It is a 30 day long festival which starts on July 23
and ends on August 20 every year.
ACCOMODATION
The
accommodation and lodging facilities around the temple are very good. There are
many good ashrams in the vicinity of the temples in Sultanganj where the
devotees can stay.
TIPS FOR DEVOTEES
To
offer their prayers the devotees must visit during the Shravani Mela in order
to see the real splendor of the temple.
