Verden an der Aller, or simply known as Verden, is a town
situated on the river Aller, from which it derives its name. It is located in
Lower Saxony, Germany. The town of Verden
is very famous for the massacre caused by the Saxons in 782 AD that had been
committed according to the orders of Charlemagne for its horse breeding and its
cathedral. The town has been subdivided into seven major districts. The town is
located in close proximity to Hannover and Bremen . Until the World War II, Verden has
very well known for its trade, crafts and its mounted division. During the War,
it was used as a zone of occupation by the British.
Among the major attractions that tourists find in Verden it
the spectacular Lutheran Cathedral situated right in the middle of the town.
The history that revolves around the erection of the cathedral dates back to
the 12th century, when it was consecrated to Saint Cecilia and Saint
Mary. There are also other Lutheran churches consecrated to Saint
Johanniskirche and to Saint Andreaskirche. There is also a House of Cathedral
Cannons known as Domherrenhaus. Another building worth a visit is the town hall of Verden .
